Little Liz…
I grew up in New England as the oldest of four girls. My first father was a pilot in the Air Force, so my earliest memories are of the sweeping desert of southern Idaho adjacent to Mountain Home Air Force Base, and the lush sugar cane fields surrounding the Clark Air Base in the Philippines. From this early age I developed a deep love for houses and history. My grandparents had a beautiful colonial home in Connecticut built around a huge central fireplace with raised paneling and detailed beams supporting the ceiling. The house was spacious, yet practical for raising a family of four children and providing many built-in bookcases for my grandparents’ extensive library. There were two staircases, and even some secret passages! It embodied what I value in a home: a classic solid plan with well-proportioned rooms which can have a variety of uses. For example, the dining room also served as the library and the large spacious kitchen became an art room during the afternoons. My grandparents’ large office doubled as a guest room.
Becoming an Architect…
I went to graduate school at the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia. My future husband was in graduate school for electrical engineering getting his Ph.D. (We met at Amherst College, where I majored in Fine Arts, with a focus on painting and he majored in Physics.) When he finished his degree, he stayed on as a Research Professor supporting his program via grants, and as life flowed forward, we ended up making Charlottesville our permanent home. We live in the same house we bought as a starter home, though we have transformed our abode through significant additions and renovations in the early 1990s. It is a nice house in a fantastic location. We can walk to the UVA football, soccer, field hockey games, to Jefferson’s Lawn and “the Corner.” Our neighbors are some of our best friends, helping to raise our three children. Our house has its own secret passage, art room and a fun kick back your heels loft. We have two huge dogs and a bunch of cats. For me a house is meant to be a home where real life happens. Dogs sit on couches and cats, on occasion, chase chipmunks into and back out of the house. A place where the unexpected drop by of friends is welcomed and family and friends join us for dinners filled with fine food, delicious wine and martinis. Memories are made. My passion is to help families further form and improve their houses, realizing homes where life will be lived in all its sloppy fun.
