Do I need an architect to design an addition to our house?

Charlottesville, Virginia architect, Liz Sloan taking the measurements of a house.

It depends on your state licensing laws. In Virginia, you do not need to be licensed to design an addition or renovation to a house. You could draw the plans. Your General Contractor could  draw your plans. Or you could hire a drafting company to draw your plans. However,  a licensed architect has taken licensing tests to confirm that their professional knowledge. It is our duty to protect the Health, Safety, and Welfare of our clients and the occupants of the buildings we design. For many people their home is one of their biggest investments, so it really does make sense to get the most qualified person to help you with your plan. Furthermore, the architect works as the OWNER’S AGENT. The General Contractor has a different responsibility.
